Chapter 10

The next morning

“Hi, I’m planning on enrolling and am hoping that you offer a course I’ve heard such good things about, Philosophy for the Ages. No, not Philosophy 101. Okay, thanks so much.” Cass hung up and sighed. “This is taking forever. I’ve called two colleges and three technical schools, and nothing.”

“We may have to broaden our search. Perhaps something that borders our town and the next.”

“Leeza goes to medical school at Wayne State University. One of their campuses is near the border.” She picked up the phone book and searched the number. Dialing it, she waited for someone to answer her call.

“Yes, hi, I’m a new student enrolling and needed another course to add credits. I heard that there was a new Philosophy course that was being offered.” She sat up straight in her chair and felt goosebumps forming all over her body. “Philosophy for the Ages. That’s the one. Who’s the professor? Stives? Right. Thank you so much.” She hung and looked over at Father Raphael.

“He’s teaching there this semester.” She had to make sure that Leeza was nowhere near that professor.

“Well, at least you now know which college application to fill out.”

She picked up the six-page application and groaned. “This is going to take all day. It wouldn’t be so bad, except that the last page is an essay!”

Father Raphael stood up. “Well, I’ll leave you to it.”

“Wait, you’re not going to help me?”

“Of course I am. I’m on my way to the store to get your school supplies. You have to look the part. At least this time you’re not risking a felony posing as a cop.”

She picked up the pencil and started to fill out the application. When it came to the part about her parents, she didn’t have a name to fill in for “Name of Father”, so she put in Raphael’s name. She started making stuff up about where she lived. A few minutes later, she sat motionless staring at the next couple of pages. It asked her about her high school, and there was a form that she was supposed to send to her high school, requesting them to forward her transcripts.

“What the hell am I going to say about that?”

“About what?” Ari asked from the doorway.

She hadn’t heard him come in at all. “I found the college that Professor Stives is going to be teaching at this semester. I am trying to fill out the paper application for enrollment. It’s asking too many questions about my high school courses and stuff. I don’t know what to say, plus they’re going to turn me down when I don’t have a transcript to send them.”

“Is there a computer around?”

She snorted. “No, Father Raphael is definitely in the stone ages.”

“Where would you normally go if you didn’t know how to do something?”

“The library.”

“Then let’s go to the library and use their computer. We’ll pull up a sample application so you will know how to fill it out.”

She took a deep breath and let it out.
